Build route planning on open data. Understand what routing costs. THE DATA IS FREE - OpenStreetMap already contains surfaces, gradients and path classifications. That is not the hard part THE ENGINE IS NOT - Use GraphHopper or Valhalla; both are open and both support custom profiles - Writing your own routing is a research project, not a weekend STACK - GraphHopper self-hosted with a bike profile, tiles from a provider or your own WHAT TO TUNE - A custom profile weighting surface and gradient is where the quality comes from - Test against routes you know. A router that sends you down a staircase is worse than a paper map OFFLINE - Vector tiles stored locally, plus a precomputed route. Live rerouting offline is a much larger job Include the GraphHopper profile, the tile setup and the offline route storage.
