Discourse

discourse.org

YES

Replaceable in one session with an AI coding agent.

Open-source forum software with trust levels, moderation tooling and a reading experience built for long threads, hosted by them or on your own server.

Promptfree, for everyone, and the only version there is
Self-host it. Mail is the part that catches people out.

RUNNING IT
- The official Docker setup; do not improvise your own image
- It needs real memory. Two gigabytes is the practical floor

MAIL, BOTH DIRECTIONS
- Outbound through a transactional provider with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set
- Inbound for reply-by-email needs a dedicated address and a poller
- Getting notifications delivered is what makes a forum feel alive; a forum whose mail lands in spam dies quietly

BACKUPS
- Discourse has a built-in backup that includes uploads. Schedule it and copy off the machine

MODERATION
- Turn on trust levels from the start and set the new-user limits deliberately
- A forum with no rate limits for new accounts fills with spam within days

Include the install, the mail configuration and the backup schedule.

What you lose

  • Trust levels and moderation tools refined over a decade of real communities
  • A hosted instance with upgrades, backups and mail delivery configured
  • Mail-in and mail-out threading, which is fiddly to get right

If you would rather not build

  • GitHub Discussions, which is free
