Gong
The value is the network, the data or the infrastructure. Keep paying.
Records every sales call, transcribes it, and analyses the conversations against outcomes — telling a sales team which behaviours correlate with closing.
Do not build this. The product is patterns across millions of calls at other companies, and you have your own. Recording and transcribing is now cheap and local. What cannot be reproduced is the comparison: knowing that a particular behaviour correlates with closing, learned from a volume of conversations no single company has. AND THE OBLIGATION THAT COMES WITH THE CATEGORY - Recording a sales call means recording a customer. In many places that requires their consent, announced before anything is captured, and the rules differ at both ends of the call - Analysing employees' conversations is separately regulated in several countries and is a works-council matter in some - These are not footnotes. Take advice before recording anything WHAT YOU CAN BUILD, AND IT IS GENUINELY USEFUL - **Transcribe your own calls locally** with an open model, and keep them searchable with FTS5. 'Which customers mentioned this competitor' becomes one query, and that alone repays the afternoon - Extract the questions customers actually ask, ranked. That list is your objection handling, your documentation backlog and your product feedback, and it is sitting in the recordings already - Talk-ratio per call — how much the salesperson spoke — which is one number, computable from diarisation, and the one coaching metric that survives scrutiny - Link each call to the deal, so 'what was said before this was lost' is answerable. That is a foreign key WHAT NOT TO PRETEND - **Do not build a scoring system that ranks salespeople from conversation analysis.** With your own volume the statistics will not support it, the number will be confidently wrong, and it will be used in performance conversations. This is the specific way homemade versions of this cause harm - Correlations found across a few hundred calls are noise. Say so rather than shipping a dashboard that implies otherwise THE ONE-LINE VERSION Transcribe locally and make the calls searchable — that is most of the value. Do not build the scoring, and get consent advice before recording a customer.
What you lose
- Patterns learned across millions of calls at many companies, which is the entire product
- Benchmarks against other sales teams, which needs other sales teams
- Telephony and meeting integrations that capture everything without anybody pressing record
- Somebody else carrying the recording-consent obligations
If you would rather not build
- Listening to five calls a week, which is what most teams actually need
- The CRM you already have, with the recordings linked to the deal

Why this verdict
our own opinion · changed only by a person
11/100
Verdict no at 11: cross-company patterns are unbuildable, the consent obligations are real, and the honest warning is against building a scoring system your own data cannot support.
