A free chat widget on your site is a script from a third party running on every page, seeing every visitor. That is the trade, and it is worth stating plainly rather than assuming.

THE THINGS TO CHECK
- What the widget loads, and from where. A third-party script on every page is a performance cost and a privacy question, and it belongs in your privacy notice
- Whether visitor data leaves your jurisdiction, which matters under EU and UK rules and is a conversation you should have deliberately
- Whether the branding on the widget is acceptable, since removing it is usually the paid part

WHEN TO KEEP IT
- Live chat matters, the volume is real, and the trade is one you are comfortable explaining to a visitor

WHEN TO BUILD
- You want the conversations on your own machine, or you want the page to load nothing from anybody else. The shape is under Chatwoot and Crisp elsewhere in this catalogue and it is a fortnight

WHAT MATTERS IF YOU BUILD IT
- A widget under 20KB, from your own domain, loading nothing until it is opened
- Delivery by polling a small endpoint with a backoff — faster while a conversation is active, slower when idle. Sockets are the obvious answer and the wrong first one
- **Offline honesty**: when nobody is available it says so and takes an email address, rather than pretending somebody is there. A chat widget that implies a person is present when the office is closed is the thing that annoys people most
- Shadow DOM so your styles and its styles cannot reach each other, keyboard operable, and usable at 320px
- Email as the fallback channel, threaded properly by Message-ID

THE QUESTION WORTH ASKING FIRST
Do you answer quickly enough for live chat to be a good experience? If replies take hours, a clearly labelled contact form is more honest and less disappointing than a chat box that looks instant and is not.

THE ONE-LINE VERSION
Free means a third-party script on every page. If that is fine, keep it — and make sure your widget never pretends somebody is there.
